In the late 1960s Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines while studying at the University of California at Davis. He returned home to France to manage the family properties in Bordeaux, including the world famous Château Pétrus.
In the early 1980s he discovered the historic Napanook vineyard, a 124 acre site west of Yountville. In 1982 he entered a partnership to buy and run the vineyard and in 1995 became the sole owner of Dominus Estate. The soil is volcanic and well-draining making it highly suited to the traditional Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard and winery are managed sustainably and environmentally. No irrigation is used in the vineyard. Just two wines are made the top wine, Dominus, and a more accessible wine under the Napanook name.
