In 1981 Pierre Gaillard bought his first plot of land near the beautiful medieval hillside town of Malleval. In 1987 he established his winery in the town and now manages 77 hectares of vines, including 25 ha in the Rhône valley, 13 ha in Vin de Pays; 29 ha in Banyuls and a further 10 ha in Faugères, which he does with the help of his wife Pascale and their three children Jeanne, Elise and Pierre-Antoine. The vineyards at Malleval are planted on steep, terraced slopes going down to the river Rhône. Only organic fertilisers are used and he employs both leaf thinning and green harvesting to ensure the grapes reach optimum ripeness. The vineyards are all hand harvested and in the winery everything is vinified parcel by parcel and variety by variety. Pierre uses oak in his red wines but says it should not mask the wines characteristics. Their labels are designed by highly regarded local artist Alain Demond.
