Far Flung Destinations - Mixed Half Dozen
Now holidays abroad are back on the cards it’s hard to know where to visit first. This mixed half dozen highlights those ‘far-flung’ must-see places and offers some destination inspiration…
First stop is South Africa where Cathy Marshall makes a deliciously crisp Sauvignon ‒ grapes grown in the cool Elgin Valley gives this wine natural freshness and balance while extended lees contact and the merest hint of Semillon add breadth and weight to the palate. For a red, head to Stellenbosch where the Gabb family at Journey’s End have created a Bordeaux mix called Pastor’s Blend. A more opulent style for immediate drinking, offering great versatility when matching with food.
Next on the list is New Zealand. Here, Greenhough produces superb, artisan wines. Their Road Block Chardonnay is clean, crisp and mineral, whilst their excellent Pinot Noir is delicate and floral, boasting red rose and dark cherry fruit with a vibrant, elegant finish.
Finally, a little closer to home is Alentejo in Portugal where João Portugal Ramos never fails to impress! Terra de Lobos red is a fruit dominant blend of Castelão and Cabernet Sauvignon made from 50-year-old vines. The white is a delicious mix of ripe apricot and peach-laden Fernão Pires and crisp, vivacious Sauvignon Blanc, perfect for alfresco dining and seafood.
