They are guardians of 14 ha of France’s top terroir with 8 ha being classified ‘grand cru’. With the exception of Clos de la Roche in Morey-St-Denis, all their holdings are in their home village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Jewels in the crown are 2.5 ha of Le Chambertin and 1.4 ha in Clos de Bèze. They own about 40% of Clos St- Jacques and have their own 1 ha monopole Clos des Ruchottes which is situated just above Mazy-Chambertin. Charles Rousseau died in 2016 aged 93, and Burgundy lost one of its great characters. Always with an infectious grin, we remember him brandishing photos of Eric’s first green harvest with the ground green with discarded grapes, “La folie,” he kept saying! Another time, to his amusement, we shared together a very old half bottle of Manzanilla La Gitana which had been languishing in his office. His son Eric now makes runs the estate, aided in recent years by his daughter Cyrille. She enjoys the link between poetry and wine so has decorated some of their barrels with verses from the poems of Beaudelaire. The wines see very controlled amounts of new oak with none on the Gevrey ‘Village’ and Lavaux St-Jacques, climbing to 100% only for the top two or three wines. The colours may not always be the deepest but the wines have a subtle power to them, velvet-smooth tannins and a distinct reflection of their vineyard.
