Gould Campbell

Gould Campbell

Irishman Garret Gould founded Gould Campbell in 1797, and bankers James Campbell & Co became partners in the firm after the Peninsula War. Acquired by the Symington family in 1970, it was in 1977 that the firm established its reputation for producing high quality robust vintage Ports at reasonable prices.

The winery is situated at Pinhão, where a proportion of the wine is made in modern temperature-controlled fermentation tanks employing robotic ‘feet’. However, a significant proportion is still made in small quintas in the hills around Pinhão, using the ancient method of treading the grapes by foot in stone tanks called ‘lagares’.
