Alois Kracher is a legendary name in Austria, a man of boundless energy, a visionary who was instrumental in restoring Austria's international wine reputation after the scandal in 1985 and a champion of Austrian sweet wines.
His son Gerhard runs the Kracher winery in Illmitz. Illmitz sees more botrytis than anywhere else, 9 out of every 10 vintages, due to the small lakes dotted around Neusiedlersee. Botrytis thrives in these perfect humid conditions and the resulting wines, after the ‘Kracher magic’, are extraordinary. The estate is practically organic.
