Maison Vincent Girardin

Maison Vincent Girardin

Vincent Girardin the man has done a bunk, but this time for good to a 500 ha arable farm in Northern France; now with only one man and one big tractor he has less to worry about! We followed Vincent from the 1988 vintage, through his stratospheric rise from small cellars in Santenay to bigger ones, to enormous ones in Meursault; from the 3 ha of vines he inherited in 1982 up to 22 ha (predominantly Chardonnay vines including much of the old Henri Clerc domaine in Puligny-Montrachet) and a burgeoning negoçiant business.

The estate has been fully biodynamic since 2008. Along the way was a bit of a roller coaster in terms of experiments with lots of oak and lots of extraction at stages, but the wines were always remarkably good. Now he has sold Maison Vincent Girardin to a large company, Les Vins d’Autrefois, owned by a man with a small name, Mr Nié. They continue to have exclusive access to the grapes of the domaine. The great thing is that Mr Nié is allowing the existing team to flourish in a way that Vincent perhaps didn’t, letting the talented Eric Germain (son of Henri Germain our long-time Meursault supplier) get on and make the wines he wants to in his own pure style and using only natural yeasts. These wines are being marketed successfully by Marco Caschera, whom we have known since his days working with Nicolas Potel.
