Producer: Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils
Louis Boillot’s wife is Ghislaine Barthod who makes her own very lovely Chambolle-Musigny in the cellars they have shared since 2003. Whilst their wines are made independently (but no doubt with some consultation), Ghislaine and Louis share the same team in the vineyards so much of the magic appears in the wines of both domaines.

It is therefore astonishing that customers overlook the wines of Louis in the ugly rush to secure the wines of Ghislaine! Maybe it is because Louis’s vines are somewhat spread out and hard to understand but this is only due to French inheritance laws. The Boillot family originates around Volnay but his own part of the family have an estate – Domaine Lucien Boillot – in Gevrey-Chambertin, now run by his brother. Of his 7 ha of vines, over 3 ha are in Gevrey-Chambertin, 2.5 ha are in Volnay and Pommard with the balance in Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-St-Georges, Côte de Nuits and Fixin. That makes for a mind-boggling 16 appellations! His wines, all red, share the same traits as Ghislaine’s, namely soft sweet tannins coupled by wonderfully pure fruit character. They are not to be missed! In recent years Louis has become obsessed with Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent particularly, making Gamay very much in the mould of a Côte d’Or Pinot Noir.
