Impressive Portugal: Delicious Douro

We champion wines from the Douro Valley, John Melhuish writes. The reds have increasing elegance, precisely defined fruit character and the whites are now finally coming into their own too.

The Douro River has a long tradition of producing its famous fortified wine, named of course after the bustling city of Porto. A unique, exciting and bewildering aspect to wine production in the Douro are the grapes employed. There are thirty different local varieties allowed and in old vineyards the varieties are mixed, a scenario known as a field blend, and are often difficult to identify. Thankfully for the production of Douro DOCs, as they have become known, fewer varieties are used. The most famous red grape is Touriga Nacional, alongside Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo in Spain) and the most widely planted, Tinta Franca. For the whites, Gouveio, Rabigato, and Viosinho appear most regularly, but every grower has another grape or two that adds a special character to their wine.
