The Cluver family, incumbent in Elgin since 1896, have pioneered the region’s ascendant wine production. Their vineyards are part of a larger farming and orchard operation – the De Rust Estate – which, combined with natural habitat, covers about 1,000 ha.
It’s found about 45 miles south-east of Cape Town. Elgin is a centre for Cape apple production and a visit to the winery – or its excellent restaurant – may find you behind a queue of tractors with trailers laden with apples! The off-spring of Paul Cluver senior, a Cape Town neurosurgeon, are now in charge and have increasingly diversified into wine, being highly successful with the more aromatic, cooler climate varieties. Of five Cluver siblings, four work in the business: Paul Cluver junior is CEO; and of his sisters Liesl is marketing director; Karin is orchard manager and Inge is financial manager, with her husband Andries Burger as cellar master. They are second or third cousins of James Tanner’s South African brother-in-law, but we buy the wines on quality alone! The estate is within the Kogelberg Biosphere UNESCO world heritage site with important reserves of Fynbos vegetation. Half the estate is given over to conservation. As far as vineyards go the Cluvers were founder signatories of the BWI accreditation system which encourages biodiversity in the wine industry. On top of all of this, the family has an outdoor amphitheatre set in a eucalyptus grove with the late Johnny Clegg, the ‘White Zulu’, amongst others having given memorable performances there! Their Gewurtztraminer, Riesling and Late Harvest Riesling represent all that is best about cool-climate South Africa.
