Back Roads of France Explorer Case Half Dozen

Travelling through such a diverse wine-producing country as France, you’ll often come across the local wine – eminently paired to the local food. We’ve picked three quite wellknown areas: Gascony in the Southwest; Alsace from the Northeast; and Beaujolais just south of Burgundy. There are two crackers from each, to remind you how good they are! From Gascony come our two ‘house labels’, both terrific value and using local grapes like Colombard in the white and Tannat in the rosé (among others). Good, honest, French country wines that you find down the back roads.

From Alsace, you’ll enjoy the Pinot Gris, a stylish, full-bodied and easy variety, some way removed from Italy’s finest Pinot Grigio, then there’s a fabulous rose petal-scented nose and a rich, spicy character on show with the Gewurztraminer. Enjoy these two with food, we’d highly recommend Asian dishes with gutsy flavours.

Your two reds come from two of the Beaujolais ‘Cru’ vineyards, the best sites of the region and a step up from Beaujolais-Villages. Gamay is wonderfully soft and yet these days, for a lot less money, you’re not far off the quality of basic Burgundy. Beaujolais’ growers are on a roll, and we hope to tempt you to trying more from our excellent range.
