Eastern European Explorer - Mixed Half Dozen
Our recent travels have produced a plethora of different characters and flavours from what we generally call ‘Eastern Europe’ but could equally be termed ‘Less well-known Europe’! There are plenty of indigenous grapes delivering good, well-made wines to excite your palate. Slovenia has yielded an effortless, easy drinking Sylvaner while Croatia brings a crisp, light Graševina to the party. Romanian Fetească comes in various hues; this white is made with an abundance of fruit on the palate and an easy finish. Martin Pomfy is a great winemaker from Slovakia and his Pinot Noir is a star. Pinot Noir also features in the light but juicy Moldovan red from Castel Mimi which is a bit of a steal. Rounding off the case is a North Macedonian Vranec, a grape whose name translates to mean ‘black stallion’; it is powerful but also well shaped, integrated and full of damson fruit, tamed by the makers at Stobi and delicious to boot.
