Lovely juicy black fruit character with herbs and peppery hints on the palate. Plenty of depth, complete and easy. A fine example of what the Douro can do.

There’s a lot of flavour packed into this own-label bottling made by Duorum for Tanners. It’s made using classic port grapes (including touriga nacional). Licorice root, black licorice sticks, dark berries, a touch of Douro wilderness, reassuringly firm tannins and a refreshing tang. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph, 11th June 2022
A succulent, juicy red with plenty of dark fruit and spicy intensity. Produced from two sites in the Douro Valley, it is cracking value. Will Lyons, The Times, 15th June 2022
A good example of the kind of value you can find in independent wine merchants: yes, there are cheaper examples of unfortified red wines from the home of port. But, pound for pound, none offer more joyous, dark-fruited succulence than this. David Williams, The Guardian, 24th April 2022

Duorum
Made by Duorum, a joint venture between João-Portugal Ramos of the Alentejo and José Maria Soares Franco, ex Barca Velha. The vines are in two sites in the Douro: in the Cima Corgo (middle Douro) and the Alto Douro, where there is a large investment in a winery and 45 Ha of new plantings at the beautifully situated Castelo Melhor, perched above a remote section of the Douro. 70 Ha of vines are also rented. José-Luis Moreira da Silva is the oenologist and João Perry Vidal is the viticulturist.
Plenty of rainfall in the first part of 2020 set up the vineyards perfectly to weather the heatwave in the summer giving small yields of deeply concentrated wines. In 2019 Portugal escaped the heatwave of the rest of Europe meaning the wines are wonderfully aromatic and elegant. Tiny yields for the second year in a row in 2018, after the previous year’s drought finally broke in spectacular fashion. Heavy rain caused soil erosion and hail was also a problem. A hot summer saved what was left in terms of quality but could not make up for the yields already lost. 2017 proved to be a hot, dry year with one of the earliest harvests on record and yields down about 35% but the quality is very good for table wine. 2016 was a complex but ultimately satisfying year with a wet winter followed by a summer that was drier and warmer than usual; the resulting wines show great balance and concentration in both red and white. 2015 was excellent and reds and whites have depth and concentration. Cooler conditions in 2014 produced some of the best whites yet. After a slow start, 2013 gave high quality wines in the end, drinking well now. 2012 was a low-yielding vintage which produced concentrated reds with good acidity that should keep. A drought year in 2011 gave great quality wines, whilst 2010 produced plenty of wine, some of which lacked a little definition. Another hot year in 2009 meant good ripeness but alcohol levels are high.
