Törley

Törley

Founded by József Törley in 1882, this became one of the leading producers of sparkling wines in Europe. It followed a chequered path between the wars ending with being nationalised by the new Hungarian communist state. However, it became a monopoly sparkling wine producer and production increased sharply.

Since the fall of communism takeovers and mergers have seen the company continue to grow with over 50% of the domestic market and exports to many parts of the world of their total production of 22 million bottles. They cultivate 900 hectares of vineyards in Hungary, in Etyek, which is very suitable for sparkling wines, and also Pázmánd, Balatonboglár and Tokaj where a lot of still wines are produced. International varieties are produced but increasingly there is interest in indigenous Hungarian varieties. Ultimate ownership is Germany’s Henkell Trocken group. This is a big company but one that makes good quality, good value wines.
