Viña Arana Reserva, Rioja, La Rioja Alta 2011
La Rioja Alta SA was founded in 1890, and has a reputation for making some of the oldest and most venerable red wines in Rioja, sourcing grapes from the best vineyards you’ll find in Spain. You should really think of Viña Arana as a Gran Reserva, as it has been aged in oak for three years and, crucially, every six months it is sluiced (for want of a better description) from one barrel, down a tube where it mixes with the air and into another. This enhances the maturity and ageing of what is now a complex red wine, intensifying all those fabulous mature, spicy, leathery notes while keeping the power and intensity you feel when you drink this classic Riojan red wine. The length of flavour is legendary, the nuances you taste are exquisite. The perfect partner for a roast leg of lamb, or rack of beef.
