von Hövel

von Hövel

The history of this estate begins in 1803 when Max von Kunow's ancesters bought the Oberemmel vineyards of the St Maximin abbey in Trier which had founded in the tenth century. It now comprises 10 hectares split mainly between the monopole vineyard Oberemmeler Hütte and the famous  Scharzhofberg and is run by Max von Kunow.

The vines are 90 per cent Riesling and are grown without insecticides and using only natural fertilisers. Fermentation is in large, traditional oak barrels using natural yeast  and then left in barrel to achieve ripeness. Eberhard's aim is to make wine with minimal intervention and without additions. The style here is typical Saar with white fruits, good acidity, plenty of slatey minerality and balancing sweetness.
