Cabernet Franc

A very old, noble variety that holds sway in the Loire reds of Saumur, Chinon and St-Nicolas de Bourgueil in particular, and then plays a supporting role to Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux. On its own it has fresh raspberry notes, sometimes a little ‘leafy’ too, and around the world (Northern Italy for example) it works best in regions a bit too cool for Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s often better aromas of blackcurrant and pencil shavings, and it makes a better balanced, if lighter wine in these conditions.
