Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a capricious variety that can be difficult to grow, but when right – perfumed, brimming with fruit and singing with harmony rarely challenged by other varieties, it is way out in front. Pinot Noir can make the most sublime wines and as such, it is the Holy Grail for many winemakers the world over. Its apotheosis is probably as red burgundy, but it forms the backbone of most champagnes; it makes classy red in Alsace, the Loire’s Sancerre region and in Germany and Austria where it is known as Spätburgunder. It is also successfully planted in Eastern Europe. The New World loves it too, from Oregon and California, in the USA, to Chile. South Africa produces some excellent examples as does Australia, though those of New Zealand – Central Otago most famously - stand out as particularly good in this company. Wherever it goes, it needs cooler climates.
