South of France

Arguably the area of the most innovation and diversity in France, the South has a wide variety of climates and terroirs allowing it to produce a vast number of very different wines. Some recent changes to what can be restricting geographical conformity have allowed growers to use different grape varieties and make wine in different styles thus challenging the freedom and innovation of the New World. Gascony was the origin of the cool, crisp dry white wine and, while other areas and countries now do this equally well, it’s still an excellent source of good value wines. Whites from cool Limoux can be very Burgundian whilst Picpoul de Pinet delivers pure summer pleasure. Provence with its pale (and all too often overpriced) rosés has rivals as many producers throughout the South are making pale, Provençal lookalikes which can be excellent, especially if Cinsault is used.

A mosaic of ever-changing AOC areas is challenging to understand, but the best red wine producers in Minervois, Fitou, Corbières, Madiran, Bergerac, Bandol, Collioure and the Coteaux du Languedoc compete with Bordeaux and the Rhône in terms of quality. Arguably the best reds from the South are blends based on Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre where the three grapes complement each other admirably. The wines here are full of herby depth and concentration with ripe fruit flavours. Organic viticulture is also on the increase as growers decide that the climate means that they don’t need so many chemicals.
