Côte-Rôtie, Pierre Gaillard 2022 En Primeur - Case of 6

£216.00

A lovely attractive wine this year, the 8% Viognier lightening the intense Syrah. Violets, dark red fruits merging with blueberries, this has lovely weight and super balance. There are plenty of tannins present but wonderfully rounded and in balance. 5-15 years.

Pierre Gaillard

Pierre Gaillard makes fabulous wines. You trek up some of the steepest slopes in Saint-Joseph to find the village of Malleval. This is Pierre’s choice spot as it had largely been abandoned in the 70s/80s due to the difficulty cultivating the steep slopes meaning the land was affordable and available!

Born in Lyon, Pierre studied agriculture which is where he came across, and fell in love with, Oenology. Over many years he has perfected his knowledge and skills in both the vineyard and winery, he minimises his intervention, uses organic fertilisers, no insecticides but won’t be certified. We like this practical, individual approach. This is now a true family affair, all three children – Jeanne, Elize and Pierre-Anton – are now making their own wines, in Rhône and further afield and taking a greater role in the vineyard management. There is no particular ‘house style’ although some high-quality oak is apparent when you first taste, but Pierre makes all the wines to express the individual terroir – handpicking parcel by parcel, vinifying separately – the aim being to demonstrate precision and purity with clear fruity aromas and refined tannin. We are big fans, and the critics are too.

About En Primeur

Lying Abroad/En Primeur/In Bond Wines

Wines offered ‘Lying Abroad’ or ‘En Primeur’ provide a good way to secure some of the most sought after wines at opening prices. In addition we ensure it is the cheapest way to buy favourite mid-priced wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône, so please ask us for our offers or check our website for latest reports. Prices are clearly marked in our sales literature and are exclusive of duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT. Shipment of claret and Port normally takes place around 30 months after the vintage, burgundy and Rhône usually more quickly. A second invoice for the duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT on the value of the wine is charged at the time of shipment - view current duty rates. There are no further charges for deliveries to a UK mainland home or work address. Your Lying Abroad purchases are covered under The Bunch Code of Practice which can be sent on request or viewed here.
