Domdechant Werner

Dr Franz Werner is the 7th generation of the family to run these prime vineyard sites in Hochheim after one of his ancestors, also a Franz Werner and dean (Domdechant) of Mainz Cathedral, inherited the estate in 1780.

Some 10 km from Wiesbaden, he has 10 hectares on slopes running from the town of Hochheim down to the River Main, the names of which, such as Domdechaney and Kirchenstück show the ecclesiastical origins of the estate. The soils are mainly alluvial river deposits, with the hills behind and the river in front giving protection and a warm climate. Viticulture is traditional and as sustainable as possible and yields are kept low with selective hand harvesting. Pressing is gentle and fermentation slow in large old oak barrels with as little intervention as possible and takes place in their vaulted cellar which dates from the mid nineteenth century. Together with his daughter, Catharina Mauritz, Dr Werner produces classic Rheingau wines in all styles
