João Portugal Ramos

Ramos started winemaking in Alentejo with Quinta do Carmo in 1985. Despite a successful consultancy career, Ramos was, though, always keen to make his own wines and in 1990 began acquiring vineyard land in the region.

An initial plot of just 6 hectares, with a further 45 hectares under contract, has grown considerably since then to 150 hectares of his own land and an additional 200 over which he has complete viticultural control. Winemaking in the area in general has expanded exponentially since the 1980s as others too have realised the potential of Alentejo. However, the upfront fruit and clear varietal labelling of Ramos’ wines have made them particularly popular on the export market. His property is Monte de Serrado Pinheiro at Estremoz.
