Introduction
A full Vintage Port declaration has become a rare thing, and 2024 is the first for seven years, bringing us closer to the long-term average of two or three years in each ten for such an event.
The Douro dependably offers the conditions for powerful red wines and thus the potential for Port, but it isn’t and shouldn’t be all about blood and thunder! This declaration comes with enthusiastic praise for a year that has produced fruit of striking purity, wines that combine richness and precision, with very fine tannins and lovely acidity. These are elegant, stylish Ports that feel classically structured, which will offer great enjoyment as younger wines and great cellaring potential.
Vintage Notes
2024, as many producers have commented, was a notably harmonious vintage for the Douro. A wet winter helped to replenish water reserves, while a mild spring along with further rainfall kicked off an early growth cycle. Early summer was a touch cooler than the new norm, and spells of light rainfall contributed to even ripening, while the drier and warmer conditions that followed never hit the extremes of recent years. Some warmer evenings in August put the vines under stress before cooler conditions returned in September, allowing for full phenolic maturity, concentration, and great freshness.
Producer Soundbites
“A strikingly beautiful Port with a rich purity of fruit that envelops the palate. Churchill’s Vintage 2024 is unquestionably one of the best Vintage Ports we have produced to date.”
“The 2024 Vintage Ports whisper rather than shout. After years of heat-driven power, these wines are characterised by their precision: taut structures wrapped in pure, crystalline fruit. This is Douro elegance with backbone, and refinement with staying power. It was worth the wait.”
“We could not have asked for better growth conditions than those of 2024, that were typically warm throughout the summer followed by a cooler harvest period for long fermentations. The 2024 declaration represents not only the quality of a single year but also a reaffirmation of the discipline required to declare a classic vintage.”
