Louis Boillot et Fils En Primeur

Introduction

The range of Beaujolais from Louis Boillot has earned a deserved following since we first offered them with the 2020 vintage, and with (almost) promise of a premier cru classification on the horizon, has there been a better time to explore the glorious gamay wines of this famous region?

These 2024s feel pleasingly classical after the warm, rich 2022 and 2023 vintages, and come in a touch lighter in alcohol, with a more streamlined shape. It’s a drinking vintage, for sure, and it will show the differences between vineyards and villages well, but the best wines will have the potential to improve in the cellar. A vintage which is already appealing to lovers of traditional Beaujolais, and the charming, supple nature make a good excuse for newcomers to get involved too!

Weather

A mild and wet winter brought an early budbreak, but cooler conditions and constant rain delayed flowering until early June – and uneven at that. As with most European winegrowing regions in 2024, disease pressure was high, requiring constant attention and vineyard work, and naturally organic producers suffered. Better weather came to the rescue during the crucial ripening period, ahead of a cooler harvest. Growers had to work hard and make sacrifices to achieve full ripeness, at the cost of a much-reduced crop.

As usual, this old vine blend is aged 50/50 in tank and foudre. Majoring on black cherry and strawberry fruit, a touch of cassis, and a lick of green to the frame, this shows very good density, with a medium-bodied palate and a juicy core. A drinker but it does have some Moulin-à-Vent structure too. 0-5 years.

Creamy, soft blue/black fruits to the nose, then strawberries which flow onto the palate, dusted with black pepper. There is a roundness to Les Rouchaux 2024, an easy-going edition that will drink on release 0-7 years.

A lovely if restrained nose of rich redder fruits, a certain herbaceousness, and classic white flowers. The palate focuses on fruit and earth more than flowers; there is a savoury vein and even a touch of game. Well structured and nicely balanced. 0-7 years.

This is nicely defined, offering a lovely freshness, and a typical Champ de Cour mix of red fruits, with a lovely touch of raspberry. As with previous releases, we like the balance, the freshness is very attractive, and it has a lovely mineral piquancy on the finish. 0-7 years

Great density from the very old vines, and the reduced yield of this difficult vintage. Spicy, rich darker fruits, a touch of salinity, and pressed dark flowers; this shows very good weight and presence but may need a little time to express itself fully. Note this is a tiny release in 2024. 3-9 years.
