Charles Joguet is one of the most respected domaines in Chinon. This wine, made from the finest Cabernet Franc, delights with its purity and simplicity. It has clean, fresh fruit with a raspberry character and great charm.
There are some excellent cabernet francs now coming out of the Loire. Charles Joguet is one of the region’s most interesting domains and this easy-drinking chinon is clean and fresh, with lots of crunchy red fruit. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times, 4th July 2021
In the Loire, where cooler temperatures emphasise the freshness but also the silkiness of the grape, [Cabernet Franc] really comes into its own in juicy, toothsome reds which can be drunk young, although some can be aged with brilliant result. From a highly regarded producer, the Charles Joguet Les Silenes Chinon 2018 is a benchmark example of the style, with masses of clean, black-cherry fruit, a lovely purity of flavour and some enticing leathery and tobacco notes – and sometimes a little dark chocolate – which are characteristic of the grape. Charles Joguet
Charles Joguet took over his family's mixed farm while studying art in Paris, following the death of his father. The eponymous domaine was founded in 1957. He did away with the other forms of agriculture to concentrate on grape production.
In order to continue his first love of art he joined up with Jacques Genet in 1985. Charles had no family so passed the estate on to the Genet family when he retired in 1997 to dedicate more time to painting and sculpture, and he is still painting today. Since 2006 the estate has been run by Jacques' daughter, Anne-Charlotte Genet, with the help of winemaker Kevin Fontaine. They have 36 ha of Cabernet planted as well as 3 ha of Chenin Blanc. The soils are mostly the classic limestone Tuf soils of the region but they have a portion grown on sandy soils at the confluence of the rivers Vienne and Loire, which goes in to the Silènes cuvée. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2016 but the organic philosophy has been practiced since 2006. The vineyards are grassed through and they also restrict yields by late pruning, de-budding, de-leafing and doing a green harvest. All the harvesting is by hand with many plots picked successively to ensure the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness. They ferment in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and age their single vineyard cuvées in 400L barrels as well as using microoxygenation to give smoother tannins in the wines.
