California

California is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world. Geographically diverse, with more than 550,000 acres of vineyards, it is home to a bewildering mix of respected, groundbreaking estates and newer, ambitious boutique wineries. Within the broader winemaking regions of the state, AVAs such as Sonoma County, Napa Valley, Santa Cruz, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara consistently produce world class expressions of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Chardonnay and much, much more.

Shafer Vineyards are synonymous with Napa Valley. The current site has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 1880’s. Supplying the San Francisco Bay area and beyond, it reportedly even made small amounts during the prohibition era. In 1972 Chicago publishing executive John Shafer recognised the true potential of this site and in 1978 this legendary Napa estate began to take form when it released its very first Cabernet Sauvignon. Shafer’s future reputation for producing luxuriant, richly textured, classy wines was ensured with the introduction of son Doug and winemaker Elias Fernandez in the early 1980’s. The Cabernet plantings have since been joined by Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Petit Sirah whilst Shafer Vineyards also produce a single-vineyard Chardonnay from vines in Carneros. Making wines of the highest quality, any vintage release from this estate is a must buy for any fine wine enthusiasts.
