Stood out at the Mouton tasting as much closer to the bigger names, and as good as we've see here. Plums and damsons run through it, good finesse, really good swirly feel in the mouth, classy with a smooth, pure finish. Excellent.

This property is under the same ownership as Mouton-Rothschild with the chai located next door and the 50 hectares of vines in three parcels neighbouring Pontet-Canet and Mouton.

It has gone through several name changes, originally Mouton d’Armailhacq, then Mouton-Baron-Philippe after the estate’s acquisition by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, and then in 1933 gender change to Mouton-Baronne-Philippe. It reverted back to d’Armailhac in 1989. The estate is planted with 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. Less Cabernet dominated than its neighbours and generally lighter in style, it can often excel in lesser vintages. Recent improvements in the chai and greater use of new oak have led to recent vintages being bigger and richer.
