Meda Branca, Luz de Beira, Terras Quentes, Carvalho Martins 2020 En Primeur - Case of 6

£117.00

75cl ALC 13%

This wine is still to be bottled and as such the advertised ABV maybe be subject to change on its eventual arrival and inspection into the U.K.

Named after an old local newspaper, and proudly labelled as Mêda, this is a blend of Rabigato and Esgana Cão (Sercial), aged on the gross lees in barrel for nine months and bottled at two years of age. Deep, expressive nose, showing some creamy oak and notes of salted toffee and baked apples. The palate has an almost Madeira-like mahogany hint, lively acidity, notes of citrus cordial and plenty of spice all adding to a sense of intensity. Stimulating stuff, tangy, salty, nutty, mineral and lip-smacking with great texture. A wine that really gets you thinking. 0-7 years.

Familia Carvalho Martins

Family-owned estate in the Douro Superior, Carvalho Martins makes fresh, characterful wines close to the Spanish border. Quinta Vale do Olmo has been in the Carvalho Martins family for four generations, with vines originally planted in the early 20th century by the great grandfather of current owners (and brothers) Vasco and Rui Martins.

During the 1980s, their parents increased plantings of indigenous varieties, taking the estate up to its current standing of 25ha but it wasn’t until 2014, when the brothers returned from careers in Banking and Law, that they stopped selling their fruit in order to make their own wines. The vineyards are in the Douro Superior, close to the small city of Mêda, only about 25km from Spain. High diurnal temperature ranges and altitudes of 550-600m provide terrific natural acidity, while the schist/granite and quartz-rich soils give great mineral expression to the wines. Sustainable methods are used throughout the vineyard and winery. The wine is labelled as Golpe (‘coup’) which refers to the change from selling their fruit to producing their own wines. A new winery and cellar was built in the town around 2014 with plans to develop eno-tourism, and there is a marvellous large dovecote repurposed as a unique tasting room!
