Press Review

"Labelled the vintage of ‘Determination’, the warm weather led to low yields, small bunches and berries, and what winemakers, in hushed tones, call ‘challenges’. As I ease into my 38th vintage in wine, it becomes stark-staringly obvious that so-called challenging vintages make far more interesting wines than easy ones! In challenging vintages, winemakers and viticulture teams truly earn their hefty salaries, doubling down on the details and becoming forensic about their approach to their duties. This happened in 2022. The fruit here is buoyant, toothsome, ripe and friendly, as it appears to work hard to impress the taster. And it achieves its goal. This is a wonderfully urbane wine with magnetic charm, a slowly revolving kaleidoscope of red and black fruit on the palate, and a fine-grained finish. This is an elegant, perfectly tailored Ornellaia, designed for those whose lives deserve moments of calm reflection. It will give great pleasure and joy early in its life and also stand the test of time. 19.5+/20. Drink 2028 – 2040"

Vintage guide

Last year’s vintage, 2023, proved complicated, good in the north but in central and southern regions, more tricky resulting in one of the smallest vintages of recent years. A dry winter followed by a hot summer has certainly affected yields in 2022, but the quality looks excellent across the country. Small but perfectly formed seems to sum up the 2021 vintage here. Across most of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The Northeast, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields were a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites.

Ornellaia

Founded by Lodovico Antinori, the estate broke away from Tuscany’s preference for Sangiovese, instead planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot with the aim of producing "Super-Tuscan" Bordeaux-styled blends.

There are 30 ha of vineyards planted on sand and clay, with the average vine age of just over fifteen years. The first vintage of Ornellaia was 1985, and since then Ornellaia has established itself as one of the great Super-Tuscans. The estate has seen a number of shareholders come and go, and is now owned by Frescobaldi.
