Blanquette de Limoux 2445 Brut, Château Rives-Blanques 2023 (organic)

£19.50

75cl ALC 11.5%

Comprising hand-harvested grapes from low yields - the world's oldest sparkling wine. With the 2023 vintage seeing an extension to 24 months lees ageing, this is an excellent Champagne substitute, offering a fine mousse with notes of baked apple pie, brioche and a biscuity finish. The ripeness of the fruit means zero dosage is required.

Château Rives-Blanques

Château Rives-Blanques is an 18-hectare estate situated between Carcassonne and Limoux in the Languedoc. The vines grow at an altitude of 350 metres within sight of the snow-capped Pyrenees, after which the estate takes its name. Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and the local Mauzac are the specialities; indeed Limoux is the only AOC Chenin in the South of France. Started by Jan and Caryl Panman at the turn of the millennium, they retired in 2022, selling the estate to Pierre Bories, a very well-connected winemaker within the region and owner of Château Ollieux Romanis. It is still run as a separate entity and continues the Panman’s legacy. The vineyards are certified organic and Pierre is currently undergoing a program of conversion to biodynamic. Access to EU funding will see a planned redevelopment of the winery in the next few years too.
