Christmas Day Menu

Whether you’re having a quiet and cosy Christmas or entertaining friends and family, a Christmas Day feast always tastes better with a good bottle or two. To help sprinkle some inspiration, Amy McCudden has hand-picked some superb bottles to match your menu.

Starters

The first course of a Christmas feast sets the tone for the whole celebration. The key is to choose something crisp and refreshing. A sparkling wine is always a crowd-pleasing choice to get the bubbles flowing, but a zesty, clean white will also harmonise beautifully with those lighter, delicate starter flavours.

Prawn Cocktail

Churton Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough

A delicious full-flavoured Sauvignon, none of your usual unsubtle gooseberry flavours here, but a wine full of ripe passion fruit and mango with a subtle mineral finish.

Cheeseboard

No Christmas Day feast is truly complete without a decadent cheeseboard. Since your board is likely to feature a range of flavours, from creamy brie and tangy goat's cheese to sharp mature cheddar and powerful stilton, finding one perfect partner is a tough ask. However, focusing on wines with good acidity or sweetness to cut through the richness, you can ensure your final course is a tasty success.

Showstopping Vintage Port

Taylor's Vintage Port 1970

There’s a strong Tanners connection with this latest batch of Taylor’s 1970, as we bottled it on release and it’s spent the rest of its life cellared locally with a long-time customer. With half a century of cellaring, this has developed into something rather special. A wine of great finesse and complexity, it shows wonderful depth and complexity with dried fruit aromas and flavours with a hint of wild strawberry fruit amongst prune, raisin and warm spice notes and has an incredibly long finish. A sensational wine with a big reputation, it doesn’t disappoint!
