Summer Sipping with Lochlea

When you think of Whisky, what springs to mind? Would a whisky cocktail be your drink of choice? Amy McCudden explore why Lochlea’s Our Barley is a superb summer tipple.

Lochlea may be a relative newcomer on the whisky scene compared to some of the older stalwart distilleries, but its youthful energy is grounded in tradition and a very special Scottish story.

Lochlea: A Whistle-Stop History

An historic working farm, Scottish Bard Robert Burns worked the land from 1777 to 1784. This farming legacy continued up until 2018 when Lochlea was officially granted a licence to produce single malt, marking the beginning of an exciting new venture.

With a deep passion for the land and sustainability, Lochlea grow barley on the farm’s fields, just a stone’s throw from the distillery where it is eventually used to produce their single malts. With an on-site water source, the full traceability of all the ingredients is exceptional, not only allowing a rigorous degree of quality control, but also adding a ‘Lochlea’ twist on the aromas and flavours it produces across their impressive range.

The core Single Malt release from Lochlea, Our Barley, pays homage to the barley grown on the land. An award-winning whisky, it’s a testament to farming, sustainability and heritage from field to glass. Even the bottle has been carefully designed to include a nod to farming with embossed tractor lines covering the glass.

Nose: Syrup, fruit bonbons, warm cut grass and breakfast marmalade
Palate: Golden syrup, cracked black pepper, rye bread, macadamia nuts, cream soda
Finish: Long with notes of orange beeswax
