Deep, dark and bursting with flavour, Malbec is one of the world’s most celebrated red grape varieties and a best-seller at Tanners. A thin-skinned, sun-loving variety, it requires lots of heat to ripen well, although the thin skin can make it prone to disease. Known for its rich colour and robust tannins, it can range from savoury and rustic to plush, velvety and fruity, depending on where it’s grown.

Thriving in the sun-drenched vineyards of Mendoza, Argentine Malbec produces intense, supple and juicy wines that are approachable when young but also age gracefully. mThese crowd-pleasing styles have propelled the grape into the spotlight, making it one of the most fashionable choices on wine lists and shelves today. But Malbec’s story doesn’t begin in Argentina. It originates in France, where it was once widely used in Bordeaux blends. Today, it’s more commonly found in South-West France, especially in Cahors, where it produces the famously deep and tannic ‘black wines’. You will also find it in the Loire Valley, where it often goes by the local name, Cot.
