Bodegas Aquitania

Bodegas Aquitania produces pure, aromatic and fresh Albariño from vineyards heavily influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The enterprise was begun by a local businessman, José Aguin, who returned to his family's winemaking roots in 2000 and took over a small bodega turning it into a modern, well-equipped winery. He also employed Cayetano Otero, one of the foremost winemakers of the region, as technical consultant. 12 ha of vines are all situated within 8 km of the winery in the Salnés Valley zone of Rías Baixas so right in the heart of the best area for Albariño, on a promontory with the sea all around and never further than a kilometre away. On well-drained decomposed granite and sand slopes – vital in this area of high rainfall – the Albariño vines are up to a hundred years old. They are grown on the typical pergolas held up by tall granite posts which they believe optimise the leaf exposure to the sun. With their cellars dug into the ground, the grapes move by gravity with minimal intervention. Furthermore, temperature control and great care to avoid contact with oxygen ensures the freshness of the wine, while ageing on lees helps the texture.
