Castelão

Once widely known as Periquita, this Portuguese variety has been cultivated since at least the eighteenth century and remains one of the country’s most planted grapes, producing medium-bodied wines with firm acidity and rustic tannins that show flavours of red plum, cherry and dried herbs, often developing earthy, leathery notes with age. It’s a traditional Portuguese red vine, most closely associated with the Alentejo and Lisbon regions of southern Portugal, and it blends very well with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah as well as other native varieties.
