Jesús Madrazo
Jesús Madrazo was associated with Rioja’s Contino estate, part of CVNE, for 30 years before recently stepping back to make his own ‘project wines’ – his dream for the best of Rioja.
His father José founded Contino, Jesús grew up there and became head winemaker in the CVNE group making their flagship Imperial wines at this pioneering Riojan single estate bodega. Having moved away, his first vintage of Jesus Madrazo wines was in 2017, with a Crianza whose fruit was sourced from very old Tempranillo and Graciano vines in Cuzcurrita in Rioja Alta blended with around 5% Garnacha from the Rioja Oriental. However, Jesús is at pains to point out that it is individual terroir that he wants to reflect in his wines, rather than producing an oaky or fruity style. Jesús wants to make a ‘wow’ Rioja, focusing on the richness and power of concentrated fruit rather than oak. His wines have great depth, a core of black fruit and much more tannic texture to them, putting them firmly in the ‘modern’ camp. They benefit from bottle-age."
