René Bouvier

We first met Bernard Bouvier in rented cellars in Gevrey-Chambertin itself before he built spacious new premises in 2006 up the road towards Dijon. He came to our attention on the recommendation of fellow Gevrey producer, Bernard Dugat.

Bernard’s first harvest was in 1982 but he took sole charge of his family domaine in 1992. The domaine stands at 17 ha with vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, Fixin and Marsannay, with the latter two often producing good value for money. Bouvier’s grapes come from extremely low-yielding vines which are organically cultivated, becoming certified in 2013. The range is supplemented with several wines from share-farmed en fermage vineyards. Bernard has refined his winemaking so that his Gevreys are now some of the most precise expressions of terroir that one can find, along with very fine fruit flavours and sensual tannins. As much as anything this is down to plenty of whole bunch fermentation and less extraction before and during fermentation. There's no need to force the extraction, says Bernard, a beautiful grape gives everything that it has to give! His wines are regularly very well written up in the French wine guides.
