Sharpham

This thousand year old, 500 acre farm is, today, owned by the Sharpham Trust and has become reknowned for both its wines and cheeses. The main house was designed in 1770 by Sir Robert Taylor and sits above the River Dart a couple of miles downstream from Totnes in Devon.

The farm has been producing wine for about 25 years from grapes grown on the sheltered slopes overlooking the river. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier go into their sparkling wines while new varieties like Bacchus are winning high praise internationally. The team is headed up by MD and wine maker Mark Sharman, a former mining engineer with a back ground in gold mining! He has been aided since 1992 by head wine-maker Duncan Schwab, plus two assistant wine-makers in recent times as Sharpham has become a major quality player on the English wine scene. If you are in Totnes, try to find time for an excellent visit - they have a superb lunchtime cafe as well as very interesting cheese and wine tours.
