The Isle of Harris Distillery is located in the small village of Tarbert, right in the heart of the Isle of Harris. Founded by Anderson “Burr” Bakewell in 2015, the distillery was established not only to create premium spirits but also with a strong social purpose - to support the local economy by creating employment, retaining population, and providing young people with opportunities to stay on the island.
First and foremost, they are a whisky distillery and the proud creators of The Hearach Single Malt Whisky. The name comes from the Gaelic word used to describe a person from Harris. While they waited for The Hearach to mature, they produced the award winningIsle of Harris Gin, featuring Sugar Kelp seaweed sustainably hand-harvested from local sea-lochs - a key botanical that gives the gin its distinctive maritime character, along with its unique bottle design.
Since releasing The Hearach in 2023, they’ve also introduced The Hearach Oloroso Expression, created using the same recipe and spirit as the original, but matured exclusively in ex-Oloroso casks to offer a sweeter profile with notes of Christmas spice.
