Bodega Abadía de Acón

An impressive, very modern and sculpted box of a winery sitting above the flat Duero Valley floor with vineyards facing both north and south, Abadía de Acón was in fact first built in 1953.

It was then that Norberto Carrasco poured the first concrete walls to make the vats, having dug down into the clay subsoil to sink his cellar below ground. Now in the hands of his grandsons, Carlos and José, the winery is state-of-the-art, designed for gravity flow and sits among pristine, old-vine vineyards. Two vineyard sites on either side of the river are planted with 95% Tempranillo (here called Tinto Fino) plus a smidgeon of Cabernet and Merlot. This brings complexity to their smooth, spicy reds. The brothers also use a mixture of American and French oak barrels, of top quality, and age the wines slightly longer than their neighbours before release. These impressive wines stood out for us in a tasting of 220 samples at varying pricepoints, and show that Acón Riberas are definitely at the top of the tree for quality while being competitively priced.
