Chanson Père & Fils

Chanson, established in 1750, is one of the grand old names of Burgundy but it certainly doesn’t rest on its laurels.

With the backing of Champagne Bollinger since 1999, the management of Vincent Avenel and wine production in the hands of Jean-Pierre Confuron, Chanson is at the top of its game and able to exploit the full potential of its stellar range of vineyards. And what a vineyard holding it is with 45 ha of premier and grand cru sites including 25 ha of prime vineyards in the Beaune appellation. Confuron, himself coming from a family estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges, has brought with him the necessary rigour that requires hard pruning, organic methods (whenever feasible) and the separate vinification of each individual plot. He also has control of further vineyards under rental agreements which almost double production, harvesting the grapes with their own team being a key to good quality. All the grapes come into a specially chilled reception area in the cellars in Beaune, before vinification and barrel ageing in a labyrinth of cellars which includes the Tour des Filles (Girls' Tower) one of the five bastions that link Beaune’s town walls. The mini-château – a perfect town residence – is now offices and a venue for show-casing their delicious wines.

Vintage guide

A hot growing season in 2023, meant sorting was required when the grapes came in to avoid any raisined fruit, but the results are looking promising and in good quantity. The region basked under the summer sun in 2022, and thanks to cool nights the wines have avoided excess alcohol while retaining elegance, it all looks more than promising! The 2021 vintage was severely affected by frost in the spring which means yields are historically low, the wines are fresh and juicy. 2020 was one of the earliest vintages on record following a warm summer but the wines have an appealing freshness too, like a combination of the previous two vintages. There was an absence of frost in 2019 but yields were still restricted, this time by drought, the resulting wines have great richness and concentration. A very good vintage in 2018 with no frosts in the early part of the season though rain in the first half of summer caused some disease pressure. Hail affected Nuits St-Georges and the Hautes-Côtes reducing yields. The resulting wines are rich and concentrated. Quantities in 2017 will be better than 2016 with equally good results. They are more red fruited than black, showing great elegance. 2016 proved a rollercoaster of a season with everything thrown at the growers in the early season but what fruit survived through to harvest is very good. Quantities, however, are small. 2015 is a memorable vintage for red Burgundy, certainly on the rich side.
