The 2021 Hillside Select is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from Shafer's hillside vineyards in Stag's Leap District and includes their prized blocks: Sunspot, John's Upper Seven, Hitching Post, and Firebreak. The long growing season of warm days and cool nights developed rich, highly concentrated Cabernet with superb aromatic power and clarity of cassis, crisp black cherry, blackberry and red plum fruits, with pressed dark flowers, and notes of cedar, tobacco and dried tea from 28 months in new French oak barriques. Full-bodied, ripe and wonderfully deep with beautiful tannins, a cool mineral vein highlighting the Stag's Leap terroir, lovely acidity and a luxuriously long finish. There are near perfect scores out there for this brilliant edition. 5-25 years.

The 2022 Hillside Select opens with generous aromatics, poise, and elegance. Hailing from a true Mediterranean vintage, the balance of opulence and freshness is striking with vibrant aromas and flavours of blackberry, plums, acai, toast, espresso, dark chocolate, and dried herbs. The ripe tannins are exquisitely integrated offering tension, depth, and enormous promise for layers of beauty and complexity in the coming decades.”— Elias Fernandez, Winemaker

Shafer Vineyards

In 1972 Shafer purchased the winery which is located at the north end of the Stag’s Leap District of the Napa Valley, and their first vintage was in 1978. The ethos is small and family orientated, the approach to the wines quite European. They are one of the few wineries to have a proper barrel cellars cut into the hillside behind the winery. In the cellar the only wood is in the barrels, everywhere else stainless steel is used to reduce the incidence of TCA.

The vineyards are managed sustainably, without the need for chemical fertilisers or pesticides, and drip irrigation (common throughout California) is used. Birds of prey are encouraged to help with the gophers. Warm days and cool nights followed by morning fog adds elegance to the wines. 21 acres over 4 sites with a production of about 30,000 cases of wine per annum. They use drip irrigation (used throughout California).

About En Primeur

Lying Abroad/En Primeur/In Bond Wines

Wines offered ‘Lying Abroad’ or ‘En Primeur’ provide a good way to secure some of the most sought after wines at opening prices. In addition we ensure it is the cheapest way to buy favourite mid-priced wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône, so please ask us for our offers or check our website for latest reports. Prices are clearly marked in our sales literature and are exclusive of duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT. Shipment of claret and Port normally takes place around 30 months after the vintage, burgundy and Rhône usually more quickly. A second invoice for the duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT on the value of the wine is charged at the time of shipment - view current duty rates. There are no further charges for deliveries to a UK mainland home or work address. Your Lying Abroad purchases are covered under The Bunch Code of Practice which can be sent on request or viewed here.
