Press reviews

"An all-encompassing blend of 30% Merlot, 25% Cab Sauv, 20% Tannat, 10% Syrah, 10% Malbec, 5% Pinot Noir from vineyards in Gascony. It has a relatively deep and bronze-tinged colour, and a fruit-forward nose of passionfruit and strawberry. With only 10.5% alcohol it is fresh on the palate despite the fruit ripeness that has an almost jammy edge, with good acid adding to the easy drinking balance."

Domaine de Pellehaut

Domaine de Pellehaut is the real-deal Gascon estate with a solid 18th century château, barrels of Armagnac quietly maturing in its cellars, 300 ha of vines and 300 ha of land put over to cereals and a large herd of Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle. The vines occupy the slopes while the cattle graze the valley bottoms. It’s a circular ecosystem, in fact they are very into sustainability, holding Level 3 Haute Valeur Environnementale since 2015.

The Béraut family has been here for almost four centuries, the present generation being brothers Martin and Mathieu, with the latter’s wife Aurélie being in the business too. The winery is very modern with the best presses and gleaming stainless-steel tanks outside. The highest gantry affords those with a head for heights amazing views over the rolling countryside to the forests of the Landes beyond. This kit represents a huge investment in their quest to making clean, fresh whites and rosés. Freshness is key and Aurélie stresses their “climat oceanique” referring to the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The depth of flavour in the wines is augmented by only using their own indigenous yeasts and carefully working the lees. Their aim is: “To make wines with a natural balance where the expression of our soils is put first.” In our book that they succeed very well, making them the ideal Tanners own-label suppliers.
