Discovering Zeni Winery

With breathtaking views and fantastic wine, Chester Branch Manager Stephanie Pierce recalls her trip to Zeni Winery.

Arriving at Zeni

Visiting Zeni Winery had been on my list ever since I joined Tanners, and the experience exceeded every expectation. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Garda, it was the perfect opportunity to explore the region.

The architecture feels unmistakably Italian: warm, relaxed, and full of character, whilst beautifully embracing the surrounding landscape to reflect generations of winemaking heritage.

The deep terracotta-red tower immediately caught my attention, creating a striking contrast against the soft ochre yellow of the adjoining buildings. Before the tour began, I took the opportunity to explore the grounds, including the entrance to the cellar, the shop and the fascinating museum, which displayed traditional winemaking equipment and machinery.

We then spotted a sign pointing towards the rooftop terrace, which instantly built up a sense of anticipation. It was also wonderful to see other visitors arriving throughout our stay at the winery. The steady flow of guests reflected Zeni’s thriving reputation and, more importantly, the genuine passion and enthusiasm that visitors hold for the estate and its wines.

The tour began with Enes, who was incredibly friendly, professional and knowledgeable. His passion for Zeni and the region was evident immediately as he guided us through the different wine-producing areas, explaining why certain styles and grape varieties suit specific locations.

One of the most insightful parts of the tour was learning about the importance of soil and the influence it can have on the character and expression of a wine. Understanding how the landscape, climate and terroir come together to shape the wines gave us a much deeper appreciation of the winemaking process.

I was captivated by Zeni’s heritage and family history. Learning about the origins of the winery, exploring the family tree, and discovering the passion that has been passed down through generations made the experience truly unforgettable.

The museum tour was one of the best ways to understand not only the wines themselves, but also the craftsmanship, dedication and winemaking decisions that have helped shape Zeni into the winery it is today.

The Panoramic Terrace

After exploring the museum, Enes guided us upstairs to the panoramic terrace. Taking a moment to pause and admire the stunning view was one of those moments that perfectly capture what makes visiting wine regions so special: the combination of exceptional wine, beautiful landscapes and unforgettable experiences.

Standing above Lake Garda, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, was truly spectacular. Photographs simply don’t do the view justice. It was the kind of place where you could lose track of time, taking in the surroundings and enjoying every minute.

Enes then guided us down into the cellar, where I immediately noticed the refreshing change in temperature after spending time on the rooftop terrace.

All I can say is wow.

I was warmly welcomed by the Zeni team, whose hospitality was exceptional. It was clear from the moment I arrived that they genuinely loved what they did and took immense pride in being part of the Zeni family.

The cellar itself was breathtaking. Surrounded by beautifully presented barrels, elegant chandeliers, intricate ceilings and remarkable craftsmanship, the space felt both grand and deeply connected to Zeni's heritage.

I was shown to a beautifully prepared table, with food and wine glasses arranged ready for the tasting. As I sat down, I took in the stunning family tree artwork above. There was something truly special about the setting, yet the atmosphere remained warm and welcoming.

Federica then gave us a personable wine tasting of her fantastic range and shared more about her family's story and the history of Zeni. She was incredibly charming, passionate and generous with her time.

I feel immensely honoured to have had the opportunity to spend time with Federica, Enes and the Zeni team. Their passion, hospitality and dedication left a lasting impression, making the experience truly unforgettable.

I also had the opportunity to taste the Bardolino Chiaretto Spumante DOC Brut, Zeni, a beautifully refreshing sparkling rosé, as well as the wonderfully indulgent Recioto della Valpolicella Classico, a deliciously sweet wine.

It was a truly enjoyable tasting experience, showcasing the diversity, character and quality of wines from the Valpolicella and surrounding regions.

The Wine Shop

The shop was everything I had dreamed of: Zeni galore!

Working at Tanners Chester, I always enjoy visiting wine shops, discovering familiar favourites and, of course, exploring new wines yet to be tasted. There is something particularly special about experiencing wines in their home region.

A case of six bottles would certainly have been making the journey home with me, if it weren’t for my rather small carry-on case! Needless to say, another trip to Zeni will definitely be on the cards.
