Ballindalloch

Ballindalloch Distillery sits at the heart of the Ballindalloch Highland Estate in Speyside, where the Macpherson-Grant family has lived since 1546. Its creation marked a return to the family’s historic association with whisky-making, with distilling on the estate dating back to the early 1820s. The modern distillery was conceived in 2011 by Clare (only daughter of Major Sir Ewan George Macpherson-Grant, the last Baronet of Ballindalloch) and husband Oliver Russell and built within a restored 1848 farm steading, using local craftsmen and traditional skills.

Opened in 2015, Ballindalloch is Scotland’s first single-estate distillery, with an unusually hands-on approach giving the team control over every stage of production. Estate-grown spring barley is malted locally, while water comes from the estate’s Garline Springs. Milling, mashing, fermentation and distillation all take place on site, using distinctive traditional methods. Long fermentation, slow distillation and specially operated worm tubs encourage the development of a delicate, complex spirit.

Production remains largely manual, from grain to bottle, with whisky filled into casks and matured in traditional dunnage warehouses on and near the estate. The distillery also embraces a circular, sustainable philosophy, ensuring little is wasted and returning by-products such as draff to the estate’s cattle. This close connection between whisky, land and family heritage defines Ballindalloch’s distinctive Speyside character.
