Carmenère

The flag-bearer of Chile, although much of it was originally imported and grown under the assumption that it was Merlot! It needs to ripen late, allowing a strong chocolate and mocha aroma to overlay the deep blackberry and blueberry fruit – otherwise a distinct, but not unattractive, green pepper flavour dominates. Good in a blend too and copes with higher alcohol levels in big wines.
