Clos de Gat
This estate covers 14 hectares situated to the west of Jerusalem in the Judean mountains bordering the Ayalon Valley. It is the dream become reality of Eyal Rotem who began planting vines on land surrounding his house in partnership with Kibbutz Harel in 1998.
Vines were planted on this site 3,000 years ago as there is an ancient press (Gat in Hebrew) in the vineyard. Eyal, who trained in Australia, has planted a selection of noble varieties after careful analysis of which plot would be best suited to each variety, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Chardonnay. The combination of this topsoil over limestone, the micro climates and slopes of the vineyards and the use of natural yeasts adds up to a specific terroir. Winemaking is in tank for the reds, barrel for the Chardonnay with ageing in French oak and ageing on the lees for the white. The wines are bottled unfiltered.
