Domaine Clavel

Pierre Clavel started this estae in 1986 with vineyards on the stoney soils to the north and south of Montpellier. These were rented vineyards which over the years returned to their owners so gradually Pierre had fewer vines on the Grès de Montpellier and more in Pic St Loup and the Montpeyroux area more inland and at a higher altitude, where they have 13 hectares in two plots, the highest at 400 metres.

Overall they now have 28 hectares all of them worked and certified organic. Grape varieties are the usual Southern French with plenty of Syrah and Grenache and biodynamic preparations are also used in the vineyards. The limestone soils and higher altitude vineyards also allow whites and rosés with good balance to be produced. Ageing for the top wines is in a variety of oak barrels and vats, including some concrete eggs. Sulphites are used as little as possible. Pierre is aided by his wife Estelle and two sons.
