Domaine Saint Antonin

Frédéric Albaret created this domaine from nothing in 1994 with 13 hectares of vines. In 2001 his wife joined him and they built a new chai and kept on expanding the vineyards to the current level of 30 hectares all on the schist typical of the Faugères appellation.

Syrah and Mourvèdre are being increasingly planted to supplement the old vine parcels of Carignan and Grenache. Much of the work in the vineyard is manual to protect the terroir, including all the harvesting. They are now certified organic. Winemaking is as simple as possible with gentle extraction and total destemming to let the terroir show through in the wines. Due to Frédéric’s care and gentle touch in the winery these wines have a lovely softness and delicious fruit. The Jardins, which was previously just Coteaux de Languedoc, is from the young vines of the estate and has great forward fruit, while Lou Cazalet is a traditional blend with Carignan and Grenache dominating. Both these wines are only aged in tank, while there is also the cuvée Magnoux, aged in foudre and demi-muids for a year and Syrah dominated. This is an excellent estate, far away from the tannic, old fashioned Faugères of the past but with great respect for their terroir and environment.
