Hacienda Araucano

Tucked into the hillside of the Lolol Valley, a southern off-shoot of the broader Colchagua Valley, Hacienda Araucano is a delightful 'farm' property designed and rebuilt by François Lurton in the late 1990s.

The vineyards slope, some of them akin to the Northern Rhône in gradient, face due south. All are farmed biodynamically with the addition of strict water-conserving measures to cut down the amount used. François has planted Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir on the granite schist soils here, but is experimenting with Viognier and Syrah on the sheerest, hottest slopes behind the house, and Cabernet at higher elevations. It's a great location, benefitting from cool on-shore breezes from the ocean a mere 40km away, yet maintaining a hot, dry climate and cool night temperatures - ideal for growing perfect grapes.
